Welcome to the Studio
The Sentence Studio is an explicit instructional guide to grammar and syntax at the sentence level, approached through the lens of function. It has been carefully designed to support educators and students in understanding how words function within sentences in order to increase reading comprehension and written fluency.
The Fables
The sentences in each unit cluster are based on a particular fable. These contain rich, authentic text utilising a wide variety of sentence structures. A “chunked” version of each fable is also provided for students who are still building their reading fluency. The sentences are broken into shorter, meaning-based phrases as a form of scaffolding for the reader.

Let's Learn
At the beginning of each unit is a summary of the new structural element. The page will explain what the structure is, provides examples to show what the structure looks like, and identifies the question you will need to ask yourself in order to how to find the structure within a sentence.

I Do Activity Sheet
The first activity is a fully worked example which can be utilised as the basis for your explicit teaching of the focus structure. In every activity sheet, students will work through the same three tasks:
Let’s Edit: Reading, editing and punctuating a sentence
Let’s Build: Defining a focus word, identifying its morphemes, and marking the grapheme-phoneme correspondences in its base element
Let’s Analyse / Let’s Map: Identifying the functional elements and transferring them to the BubbleMap™

We Do Activity Sheets
Next, there are four activity sheets for you to complete collaboratively with your student. The students are guided through the task with a carefully designed question and answer tool, which has a built-in self-checking mechanism. After the initial task, the student will build and fill their own BubbleMap™.

You Do Activity Sheets
Once the student has mastered the concept, they have four activity sheets to complete independently. These follow the exact same format as the earlier “We Do” sheets. These also make great homework tasks. After the initial task, the student will build and fill their own BubbleMap™.

Let's Write
At the completion of each unit, the student is invited to map and write their own sentences, using the structure they have just learned. This provides learners with an opportunity to transfer their learning to a new context, and provides the educator with valuable assessment data.

Answer Key
The answer key not only includes the correct editing, the completed word sum and orthographical analysis, and the completed BubbleMap™, but also includes additional interesting information related to the focus word or its spelling to support you in your word investigations.
